Professional Writing Course

The aim of the course is to enable students to produce short pieces of writing (letters, memos, emails, short reports) related to their own areas of work.

By the end of the course it is expected that the students will be able to produce effective texts that are written:

  • in an acceptable format
  • in a simple, clear and appropriate style
  • in a well organised and well balanced way
  • with a high degree of accuracy

The course is for 20 hours (4 weeks). Lessons are for 1 hours a day from Monday to Friday

Courses Content varies according to the particular needs of students and their language ability. The following areas are covered:

  • Writing Formats (2 hours)
Formats include different types of formal letters and reports (requests for information, giving information, making enquiries, complaints and proposals), email and short message formats.
  • Writing Process (6 hours)
Writing is also a thinking and planning activity and one of the most difficult things to do is to organise arguments and ideas in a piece of writing. Process writing involves developing ideas, revising, editing and producing final copy
  • The Mechanics of Writing (6 hours)
The nuts and bolts of writing are grammar, vocabulary and syntax. The course examines the commonest grammatical structures needed in professional writing; simple and complex sentence construction; paragraph writing and vocabulary building
  • Functions of Writing (6 hours)
The course examines language functions needed for professional writing: description; narrative; definition; exemplification; classification; comparison; cause and effect; style and appropriacy

Course Methodology

  • Most classroom learning is done through task based activities after clear models and examples have been provided by the teacher.
  • Tasks include case studies for discussion and practice
  • Students are given a file at the beginning of the course and all given all the course materials as the course progresses
  • Self study is an important course component. Students are expected to write (to draft, revise and edit) on computer.
  • Homework tasks are given and students are also expected to produce pieces of writing related to their own work.
